Useful Information after Arriving In Taiwan

From Taoyuan International Airport to Tzu Chi University

  • The OIA is pleased to provide a pickup service for international students from Taoyuan International Airport, directly to Tzu Chi University, Hualien. We suggest that you coordinate your arrival according to the specified "Dates to Note," which can be found on page 3.

Should You Decide to Travel Directly from the Airport to Tzu Chi University Campus, You May Follow the Directions Below:

Travel by railway:

  • Make sure that you have applied a new cell phone number at the airport and have cash (TWD) available.
  • Take airport MRT to Taipei Main Station, and follow the sign of  Taiwan Railway Station to go to Taipei Railway Station. The travel time is around 45 minutes, and it costs NT$160.
  • Go to Taipei Railway Station lobby. Ticket vending machines and ticket counters are located in the center of the lobby.
  • Travel time from Taipei to Hualien is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, depending on the train, and the ticket costs around NT$440.
  • Exit Hualien Railway Station, and take a taxi to Tzu Chi University Main Campus. The travel time is 5 minutes, and the taxi fare costs approximately NT$120; or to Jieren Campus, which takes 10 minutes, and costs approximately NT$160.

Apply for a New Cell Phone Number at the Airport

  • Purchase a SIM card
    You may purchase a SIM card at Taoyuan International Airport, before presenting your passport to an Immigration officer. You may consider buying a one-month plan.
  • How to purchase a SIM card?
    • You may go to a cell phone store at the airport, and present your passport and boarding card
    • It is very important for you to purchase a SIM card at the airport.

You can bring your ID card, issued by your government (or the Entry Visa), and your passport to sign up for a cell phone plan. It’s highly recommended that you sign up for a new cell phone plan at the Airport when you arrive; otherwise, you will need a Taiwanese citizen as your guarantor, should you decide to sign up later.
