Tzu Chi University 2025 Commencement Honoring the Journey—Embracing the Future
On June 7, 2025, Tzu Chi University held its commencement ceremony, celebrating the achievements of 1,566 graduates—including recipients of doctoral, master’s, bachelor’s, and five-year college degrees. Dharma Masters from the Jing Si Abode, Tzu Chi Foundation leaders, faculty, staff, volunteers, government officials, and families gathered to mark this joyful milestone.
During the ceremony, graduates received their diplomas and had their tassels turned by faculty members. Many bowed deeply to express heartfelt gratitude to their professors and parents for years of support and guidance.
In a special video message, Dharma Master Cheng Yen reminded graduates that education is not only about acquiring knowledge but also about cultivating character—remaining humble, using one’s abilities to benefit others, and living with gratitude, understanding, and compassion. Dharma Master De Chen echoed this message by quoting Tagore: “Let life be the light that lights another life,” encouraging students to be like fireflies—small, yet able to shine light in darkness.
President Ingrid Liu commended graduates for their resilience and teamwork, especially during the challenges of the pandemic and natural disasters. She shared three key reminders for the road ahead:
- Face challenges with initiative, not complaints.
- Use your skills to improve the world.
- Live simply and care for the Earth, starting with yourself.
Graduates shared stories of growth and transformation. Li-Xuan Lin, from the Digital Media and Technology Program, once hesitant about Tzu Chi activities, grew into a student leader and overseas volunteer in Mozambique and India, documenting disaster relief efforts. “Tzu Chi gave me global vision, practical skills, and a new life,” she reflected.
Yu-Chieh Kao, a nursing graduate, overcame her lack of dance experience to join international performances. Through perseverance and teamwork, she became more composed and empathetic. Her mother shared her pride, saying, “”Even a tiny firefly can shine brightly in the dark.”
Graduates also expressed gratitude to the Tzu Cheng Fathers and Yi Te Mothers. Their warmth and encouragement—especially during the pandemic—provided comfort and support. Tzu Cheng Father Wan-Wang Chen encouraged the graduates: “No matter your background, never give up. Remember the Four Infinite Minds—loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity—and move forward with courage.”
In addition to the main event, each college hosted its own celebration. Diploma presentations and tassel-turning ceremonies were live-streamed so families could take part, whether in person or online. Graduates captured joyful moments across campus as they prepared to carry Tzu Chi values into the next chapter of life.
To all our graduates: Congratulations! Walk forward with courage, compassion, and purpose. The future is bright.
